Valor Amid Violence: Remembering a Filipina Hero in the Israel-Gaza War

In the throes of the devastating conflict in Israel, a story of heroism emerges, casting a light on the extraordinary courage of a Filipina nurse whose sacrifice became a testament to unwavering loyalty and humanity.   As the Israel-Gaza hostilities escalated, one woman’s fortitude stood out. Angeline, a dedicated Filipina nurse in Kibbutz Kfar, Gaza faced a harrowing decision as chaos enveloped the region. Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum recounted the heart-wrenching tale of how Angeline, despite having the option to seek safety amidst the Hamas offensives, staunchly refused to abandon Nira, her elderly patient. “Caught in the vortex of violence, Angeline exhibited an extraordinary sense of duty, choosing to stand as Nira’s pillar of strength,” Hassan-Nahoum reflected with profound respect. “Their lives were tragically snuffed out, a stark reminder of the senseless brutality of war. In the face of sheer terror, Angeline’s bravery shines as a beacon of true honor.” The Deputy Mayor’s voice quivered with emotion as she emphasized the deep bond between Israelis and the Filipino community in Israel. “Filipino workers form the backbone of our caregiving sector, a comforting presence for our seniors and children, and a blessing to numerous families, including my own. Losing any one of you is a heartbreaking as losing one of our own.”   In another tale of resilience, a 33-year-old Filipina caregiver, opting for anonymity, narrated her ordeal during the nocturnal terror at Be’eri Kibbutz, merely three miles from Gaza. She and her employer, Diana, found themselves ensnared in a nightmare, crouching in fear for 18 relentless hours with no sustenance, only to be liberated by the Israel Defense Forces in the stealth of the pre-dawn hours.   These stories provide just a glimpse into the larger narrative of Filipinos’ experiences in Israel, emblematic of the risks they face and the heroism they display in conflict zones. Recent reports mourn the loss of four Filipino lives in the ongoing strife, a tragic testament to their commitment not just to their employers in foreign lands but also to the families relying on them back home.   With approximately 30,000 Filipino workers in Israel, everyone contributes to a narrative of courage, care, and sacrifice that transcends borders and ethnicities. At TheFilipinoHero, we solemnly recognize and celebrate these valiant souls, whose stories of heroism underpin our mission to honor such undaunted spirit and dedication.

Unsung Heroes: Celebrating the Strength and Resilience of Filipino Women Overseas

A dedication to all Filipino women overseas in celebration of International Women’s Day

The strength and resilience of Filipino women overseas often go unnoticed and unrecognized. In celebration of International Women’s Day, there has never been a better time to honour and celebrate these unsung heroes for their incredible contributions and achievements. From the work that they do in health care and other service sectors to the sacrifices they make in order to provide for their families, Filipino women overseas represent an important part of the global workforce.

Filipino women are a significant force in the global workforce, representing around 60% of the Philippines’ overseas foreign workers of around 10 million. They have been instrumental in helping drive both the growth of the economy of the Philippines and their host countries, working in a wide range of industries, including health care, manufacturing, education, family care and hospitality. They are a strong workforce with presence from North America, Asia to the Middle East.

Many of these women leave behind their families and homes to work abroad due to economic hardships or because they want to provide better education for their children. But despite the difficulties of being away from home, Filipino women overseas thrive and continue to be the pillar of strength to their children, families and community back home. Nonetheless, they are making significant contributions to their host countries’ economies from being caregiver to families as nannies, housekeepers to elder care. These Filipino women are behind some successful lawyers, doctors, CEOs, politicians or decision makers in first world countries looking after their children or elder parents, managing their household or making sure the family has a healthy meal, so they can focus on their careers or in running a country. Many of these women also provide essential services from manufacturing, hotels, groceries, nursing homes and hospitals. They in a way are significant to the functioning of many economies around the world.

Despite the challenges they face, Filipino women continue to display tremendous resilience and strength. They have shown incredible ability to adapt to new environments and cultures, often going above and beyond in order to provide for their families and achieve their dreams. The Filipino women’s innate caring abilities are in fact their strength. They are patient, compassionate and caring in general. They value respect more than anything as their guiding principle in any relationships.

The resilience of Filipino women overseas is something that should be celebrated and admired. From sacrificing their personal lives to setting up new homes in foreign lands, to caring for someone’s children as their own while maintaining a close bond with their own children halfway around the world. These women are a testament to the power of the human spirit. They are an inspiration to us all and serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion, working hard and never giving up.

It is important to recognize the hard work and contributions of Filipino women overseas. This International Women’s Day, let us honor and celebrate their strength and resilience. Let us remember that, despite the difficulties they face, these women continue to make invaluable contributions to the global workforce, to the Philippines economy and serve as an inspiration to us all.

Heroes in a Foreign Land: The Challenges Faced by Overseas Filipino Workers

The Filipino diaspora is one of the largest in the world, with an estimated 10 million Filipinos having ventured abroad in search of potential job opportunities. Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs) have been labeled the “Battle for Dignity”, highlighting the difficult and sometimes dangerous journey they take in pursuit for a better life. OFWs are defined as Filipinos either residing or working abroad. Despite the common goal of achieving a higher quality of life, OFWs face numerous social, economic, and political struggles as they seek to cultivate a new home. In this blog post, I aim to explore the various hardships faced by OFWs and how we can continue to provide support and assistance.

For many OFWs, the most challenging aspect of their job is the separation from family. OFWs are often forced to leave their homes and loved ones behind to support their families from afar. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression as they struggle to cope with the distance. This family separation most times led to broken homes as the children are raised by either one parent or a relative(s). Often, the children are the ones that suffer most because of absence of warmth of a mother. Furthermore, language barriers due to the varying cultures and customs can be difficult to overcome as well. Many OFWs are not fluent in the language of their destination country, making it hard to connect with their employers or excel in their jobs or work their way up in any organizations. This language barrier can also lead to decreased access to health and mental health services.

Another issue for OFWs is the lack of a solid support system. Filipinos are known for their tight-knit families, so being separated from them can be incredibly difficult. Not only do OFWs struggle with the physical disconnect from family members, but they struggle to build and establish new friendships in their host country. Moreover, they also lack access to mental and emotional support they need. Financial strain due to the cost of living abroad can lead to additional stress, creating an even bigger strain on personal relationships.

Finding work abroad can be a difficult, expensive and unstable endeavour. Many times, there is a lack of job security, and lack of knowledge of employment law, leaving OFWs vulnerable to exploitation and abuse at the hands of their employers. Low wages and unsustainable working conditions can also be a problem. With limited job opportunities, many OFWs are forced to take on jobs they are not qualified or sufficiently trained for, or to accept lower pay than they deserve. This can result in an inability to save money, putting their financial security in jeopardy.

In addition, professional development opportunities can be limited, especially for OFWs who work in menial and low-skill jobs. Without access to education and training opportunities, these workers are unable to develop the skills needed to advance their careers or pursue new job prospects. This can lead to a lack of job mobility and even greater financial strains.

The journey of an OFW is one of equal parts courage, resilience, and sacrifice. It is an immense struggle to balance the desire for a better life and the longing to be close to family. The struggles faced by OFWs are a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the lengths people will go to provide a better life for themselves and their children.

Overseas Filipino Workers are one of the strongest and most resilient populations in the world. Despite facing numerous challenges, OFWs push on in their journey for a better life for themselves and their families. It is our responsibility to provide them with the necessary support and assistance so that they can continue to pursue their dreams and create a better future for themselves. At thefilipinohero.com, we are dedicated to celebrating OFWs for their courage and sacrifice. Through discounts and perks, we are honouring their efforts as we support them on their journey.
